Now that you have your supplies and your beautiful full lace wig has arrived from ShopLaceWigs.com, YOU ARE READY!

Washing, Conditioning and Sealing the Knots of Your Lace Wig:

  1. FIRST, RELAX! If this is your first time applying a lace wig, you have probably spent time on YouTube and the Internet researching until your eyes could not take it anymore :)
  2. DON’T CUT THE LACE – this is a critical mistake that many lace wig wearers make with their first wig. Wait to cut the lace last. Why? If the fit, color, etc are wrong and you have cut the lace on the wig – your vendor may be less likely to accept a return or exchange. ShopLaceWigs.com accepts returns for store credit within a limited time period - Click here for ShopLaceWIgs.com policy information.
  3. Place the wig on a styrofoam wig head and use a wig pin to hold the wig in place.
  4. Puncture through the UNCUT lace or elastic stretch area of the wig.
  5. Rinse the wig on the wig head using a gentle stream of cool water.
  6. In a plastic bottle, mix 50% shampoo (one suitable for Indian hair – Silicon Mix,Dove Moisture Intense, Suave Professionals Humectant, Paul Mitchell) and 50% water.
  7. Pour the shampoo mixture evenly over the wig and use a wide toothed rounded end comb to distribute the shampoo.
  8. Remember to always comb starting at the ends of the hair to the roots.
  9. Rinse the wig on the wig head using a gentle stream of cool water.
  10. In a plastic bottle, mix 50% conditioner (one suitable for Indian hair – Silicon Mix, Dove Moisture Intense, Suave Professionals Humectant, Paul Mitchell) and 50% water.
  11. Pour the conditioner mixture evenly over the wig and use a wide toothed rounded end comb to distribute the conditioner.
  12. Rinse the wig on the wig head using a gentle stream of cool water.
  13. Place a towel over the wig (still secured to the wig head) and gently press excess water from the wig.
  14. DO NOT rub or wring the wig in the towel.
  15. Spray a leave in conditioner like Fantasia IC liquid Leave- In conditioner and evenly distribute combing from the ends of the hair to the roots.
  16. Roller set or allow to air dry. This is a good time to make a part if desired. The hair will lay flatter when wet.
  17. FYI: Regardless of manufacturer, all wigs eventually begin to shed as they age. Lace wigs sold by ShopLaceWigs.com are well-made and resilient. Our clients experience minimal shedding. In order to further minimize shedding follow this  TIP - Minimizing shedding – Sealing the knots:
    1.   Once dry, turn your wig inside out and place in a shower cap or plastic bag to protect the hair. Only the inside of the lace cap should be showing.
      • Outside in a well ventilated area, spray a light mist of a knot sealer (ex: Patricia Nimcock’s or TDI) to seal the knots and minimize shedding. This should be repeated monthly.
  18. TIP - Preventing fraying of the lace
    •   Once are satisfied with the fit and color of your lace wig, then  cut the lace.
      • Use jumbo hair clips to keep the wig hair back.
      • Apply a thin line of Flay Block or Fray Check and allow to dry completely.
      • Use small maincure scissors to accurately cut away the excess lace.
  19. Style as desired.
  20. You may blow dry, flat iron, or curl your 100% human hair ShopLW.com lace wig – please keep in mind that such processes are drying to the hair. Minimize dryness by adding moisture products and minimizing heat on the wig.

Applying Your Lace Wig:

  1. It is recommended to have a stylist complete your first lace wig application. Once you are comfortable with the process on your own, it is still recommended that you have a S.O.S. = Stylist on Demand. Someone that you can count on to apply your wig when you don’t have the time or the patience to.
  2. Before using any type of adhesive perfom a 24 hour patch test. Place a small amount of the adhesive in an inconspicious area of your body (inside of elbow, behind the knee) to ensure that you do not have an allergy to the product.
  3. Prepare your hair as flat as possible (Wrap, cornrow, pull back in a low ponytail for short hair).
  4. Use 91 % alcohol on a cotton pad or washcloth to clean the perimeter of your hairline of any oil. All adhesives require an oil free surface to attach properly.
  5. Apply a scalp protector as a dermal barrier and to increase adhesion of your preferred adhesive choice.
  6. TIP: Using a wig cap
    1.   Place a nude color wig cap on your head if desired.
      • A wig cap helps to protect your hair and lock in moisture within your hair underneath the wig.
      • It also creates the illusion of scalp throughout the wig, regardless of where it is parted.
  7. Place the wig on your head and use eyeliner to mark the placement of the wig at your temples, sideburns, etc. These marks will serve as guidelines during the application process.
  8. TIP: Make sure that the lace wig is positioned in front of your hairline. If you have a small forehead or prominent temples, there is no need to shave your baby hair. You may place the lace wig behind your hairline by sewing it to a small cornrow with a small portion of your baby hair and hairline left out.
  9. Apply your adhesive of choice in front of your hairline. If using a soft bond adhesive like Mastix P Spirit Gum or Ultra Hold, please keep in mind that such adhesives stick better once sticky or  tacky to the touch. Allow time for the adhesive to become sticky before pressing your lace into it.
  10. TIP: A blowdryer is beneficial during this step to keep the wig’s baby hair out of the adhesive and speed up drying time.
  11. TIP: Use the tip of an orange wood stick to press the lace into the adhesive. This fine point allows for a precise application and eliminates the look of  excessive baby hairs stuck in the glue.
  12. TIP: Apply your lace wig at night, before going to bed. Tie your perimeter down to allow the adhesive time to dry completely. Pulling, sweating, rubbing your perimeter at this stage will cause lifting on the edges of the lace wig. Sleep on it :)
  13. Once the adhesive has dried completely, use a Q-Tip soaked in alcohol to remove excess glue from the hairline.
  14. Style as desired.
