Here is the 3rd key to a fabulous, undetectable lace wig application:
THE 4 KEYS TO A FABULOUS, UNDETECTABLE LACE WIG APPLICATION:
- The Lace Wig Matters
- The Adhesive Matters
- The Application Matters
The Application Matters. There are a variety of application methods . But BEFORE you apply your lace wig, there are a few items that you may need to purchase. Here is a starter shoppling list:
What to purchase BEFORE your ShopLW.com full lace wig arrives ~
- Scalp Protector or Skin Shield (my personal favorite – contains a polymer than helps the adhesive work better) - both provide a dermal barrier to protect skin from irritation from adhesives.
- 91% or 99% alcohol - 91% available in big bottles at Walmart vs. stronger 99% available online only. I use alcohol to remove oil from my perimeter before I use adhesive and attach my lace wig; to clean up after applying; to remove the lace wig (as a solvent for the adhesive); to clean my lace of adhesives once removed = 101 USES!
- Solvent for your adhesive of choice – I use alcohol, but depending on your adhesive of choice you may prefer something like Lace Release or PURE Citru-spice Citrus Adhesive Remover
- Shampoo & Conditioner
- Silicon Mix Shampoo & Conditioner - I LOVE this Dominican product! Great on wig and my hair as well! Eliminates the need for bleach bath and extends life of wig by detangling and maintaining proper moisture level. Available online.
- Dove Moisture Intense Shampoo & Conditioner - Available at Walmart
- Suave Professionals Humectant Shampoo & Conditioner – Available at Walmart
- Rounded end wide toothed comb - Great on wig and my hair! Nylon ball tips help comb glide easily through hair without damaging knots.
- Hoopla (Looped) Brush – The Hoopla Large Paddle Looper Brush is specifically designed for hairpieces, wigs, braids and extensions. This brush specializes in brushing and styling without damaging hair strands, bases, knots, or bonds. Each looped bristle is too large to ‘cut’ hair like ordinary pointed bristles keeping hair in the best shape possible. Again – Great on wig and my hair!
- Styrofoam wig head and t-pins (puncture only through crown and or elastic stretch area of wig) – I ALWAYS wash and condition my wig on a styrofoam wig head!Prevents tearing the lace and makes styling easier (ie: roller sets, etc.)
- Patricia Nimcock clear matte acrylic spray (my preferred choice) or TDI Knot Sealer – use a light mist on the inside of the cap of the wig to seal the knots. I do this once a month on my units. Prevents shedding and extends the life of the wig. Available online at at craft stores like Michael’s, Hobby Lobby, Ben Franklin’s
- Fray block - Use a thin line, spread evenly with small paintbrush, allow to dry and then use sharp miniature manicure scissors to cut lace. Prevents fraying of lace and eventual hairloss on wig at hairline. I reapply once every other month. Available online and at JoAnn’s Fabric Store.
- Q-tips – 101 uses!
- Black Eyeliner Pencil or liquid Eyeliner – I use to mark at hairline wear I will place my wig – as a guideline. I also use to mark the lace when “customizing” a stock unit. I mark where I need to cut (if sideburns are too long, nape extends too far down on neck, etc.), then I apply Frayblock, allow to dry and cut into hair to remove the excess and “customize”.
- Wig Cap, Flesh colored Knee or Thigh High – I use a Nude color knee high from CVS to lock in moisture for my own hair under wig and provide the illusion of scalp throughout my applied wig no matter where it is parted.
- Cotton pads – To clean my skin with alcohol before and after an application – both applying or removing.
- Small paintbrush – to spread Frayblock on a new unit; to spread adhesive.
- Nude colored concealer – I use with an angle eyeshadow brush to enhance illusion of natural part and scalp showing through.
- Leave-In Conditioner – Fantasia IC has a lightweight leave in that I love for Silky Straight, Yaki and Body Wave full lace wigs (my own hair as well). Mixed Chicks has superior products for curly lace wig units.
- Orange wood stick – My secret weapon for a perfect hairline application! I don’t have to use my fingers and press or camoflauge with a lot of baby hair.
- Sharp miniature manicure scissors – Jusy say NO to giant craft scissors to cut you delicate lace. Get a more precise finished product with manicure scissors. Takes more time – but you inly have to do it once , when the wig first arrives.
- Small Spray bottles (for alcohol, water, etc)
- Blow dryer – I use to dry the adhesive and speed up the application process a little. It also helps keep the baby hairs out of the way while I am applying.
- Jumbo Clips – I use Jumbo Clips to keep the hair on the wig back while applying. I like these instead of mini metal clips or bobby pins – prevents pulling hair out from knots on wig when removing the clips.
- Attachment tools
- Glue adhesive (hard bond or soft bond)
- Needle and thread if you choose to sew the wig on
- Double sided wig tape (ie: SuperTape, ProFlex Tape)
- Wig Clips
